Flagons Den is serendipity for start-ups

A social for London’s technology entrepreneurs.

Our Classic pitch practice is a light-hearted social framed around sharing ideas and discussing them in an intimate group of your peers.

We make sure everyone gets a chance to introduce themselves and their ideas. After all, how else are you supposed to get serendipity?

I discovered HAML last week. It has changed my life. Screw writing HTML (or ERB). HAML is the future! http://haml.info/

The journey of discovery continued when I stumbled across Microsoft Research videos on auctions: http://research.microsoft.com/apps/video/default.aspx?id=175377
I accept pity in the form of emails, texts and ‘there-there’ pats on the back.
We are running a live (not-for-real-money) Wigwamm auction tonight at 7pm. If you want to take part, say and I’ll send you the URL.

Genius you need to read/see from the last week
Overly Attached…. Computer…?
We need a Naval Ravikant in the UK – build an Angel List, change laws, effect positive change
US-based angel investor, Jeff Miller, talks about common mistakes in 2 years of investing
Ian Hogarth’s (Songkick) guide to Biz Dev – hint: follow him on twitter @soundboy
For the stalker in us all, Campus London now has a directory of all its members
And here’s a little gem from London start-up ‘scene’ stalwart Iqbal Gandham: digitalinsight
Great article, beautiful animated GIF from The New York Times on the tribe of Quiet Ones
And my favourite article of the year so far: Entrepreneurshit by Mark Suster

Helping early stage entrepreneurs with what’s next

For newbies, what happens at Flagons Den: Everyone in the room take turns to stand up, introduce who they are, what they do and if they had a crazy idea to pitch, what that would be. From there, conversation ensues based on anything that piques the interest of others in the room.

We keep the group size small enough to ensure the conversations are intimate and varied. Everyone leaves having been able to share ideas in a relaxed environment. That is what makes Flagons Den special: no pressure, just chatter.

Featured Start-up

Douglas Squirrel – Secret Sales

I am not too enamoured with modern e-commerce sites. Amazon still rules, which means the new breed just aren’t very good.

But I do have a lot of time for Secret Sales CTO Douglas Squirrel. Smart, level headed and generous with advising aspiring entrepreneurs over lunch (his shout).

Douglas is looking to strengthen his team with developers who want to work for a (very well) funded start-up. They code in PHP and push code continuously. If you want to gain great experience, I couldn’t recommend getting in touch with Squirrel enough: douglas.squirrel@secretsales.com

Patent of the week

Different ways of playing with your joystick

http://www.inc.com/jeff-haden/5-jobs-every-entrepreneur-should-have-before-starting-a-business.html

If you’ve ever had the desire to play a game using a controller that vaguely resembles the Starship Enterprise, Sony may soon have you covered. Behold, a recent patent unearthed by GameInformer. Filed just this last month, the mock-up features the PlayStation Move centered between two adjustable handle bars.
Sony's new controller patent is um, interesting photo
